- 48 saltine crackers salted
- 3 sticks butter unsalted
- 300 grams light brown sugar about 1 ½ cups, packed
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Christmas sprinkles optional
Get Recipe Ingredients
Arrange crackers side by side on prepared baking sheet in a single layer.
Over medium heat, melt butter and brown sugar together. Bring to a boil for about 10 minutes, stirring periodically (too much stirring can cause the caramel to separate).
Pour and evenly spread caramel over crackers (work quickly here, it will harden fast).
Sprinkle chocolate chips over top, and once it starts to look melty (about 2 minutes), spread it evenly over the caramel using an offset spatula.
Top with any sprinkles as desired (or not).
Let set at room temperature or refrigerate for 2 hours, then break into pieces.
- Caramel Temperature: If you are not using a candy thermometer, look for the visual cues in the color, it should be a deep golden but not brown. If you are using one, 270-290F is where you want to be and you can move on to the next step.
- Boil Properly: Be sure to boil for the time suggested to ensure the caramel will set correctly without overcooking it.
- Spread Quickly: The toffee hardens fast, so work quickly to cover all crackers evenly.
- Watch the Oven: Keep an eye during baking, you just want it to bubble, not burn.
- Melt the Chocolate Gently: Let the residual heat soften the chips before spreading.
- Break Once Set: Wait until fully cooled to get those perfect shards of toffee crunch.
