See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Chocolate Cake Mix: The shortcut that makes this recipe quick and consistent. Any standard chocolate cake mix works well.
  • Ingredients Called for on the Box: Most mixes require eggs, oil, and water to prepare the batter.
  • Chocolate Frosting: Creates the signature dot cake finish and holds the sprinkles in place.
  • Rainbow Sprinkles: Classic rainbow nonpareil sprinkles give the cakes their colorful look and a little crunch.

To make this recipe, grab measuring cups, a large mixing bowl9x13 baking pan, and 9-ounce dessert cups.

Variations

  • Cake Mix: Swap the chocolate cake mix for red velvet, vanilla, yellow cake, or anything you like.
  • Colored Frosting: Use colored frosting to match holidays or birthday themes.
  • Sprinkles: Try different sprinkle blends for seasonal celebrations.
  • Mini Versions: Make mini versions using even smaller dessert cups or mason jars for parties.

How to Make Chocolate Dot Cakes

These chocolate dot cakes start with a simple sheet cake that is cut into rounds and layered into cups. It's that easy.

Make your cake batter in a large bowl according to the instructions on the box and transfer to a half sheet pan measuring 13"x18" that has been sprayed with non-stick spray. Mine called for 1 cup of water, ½ cup oil, 3 eggs and a 350F oven and I baked it for 13 minutes (which is about half that a 9x13 pans calls for).

Once the cake fully cools, cut circles out of it with the container you chose to make finish your cakes in. I used 8 ounce mason jars and make 2 cake rounds for each of them which gave me a total of 13. Depending on the size of your cups/containers, the final yield may vary.

Lightly press each cake circle down then and spoon or pipe your frosting on top to fill the entire cup (I used about 2 ounces each, but it depends how tightly you pack the cake); go slightly higher so you can level it off with a knife and create a flat surface.

Place sprinkles on a shallow bowl or plate and dip the frosting into the sprinkles, pressing down lightly, to make sure they stick well.

Hint: Let your cake cool completely. Cutting into warm cake will crumble and make assembly much more difficult because the icing will melt.

Recipe Tips

  • Containers: Consistent cup sizes help ensure even portions, but you can mix it up to your preferences.
  • Pack the Cake Lightly: Press the cake down enough to create a stable base without making it dense.
  • Level the Frosting: A flat frosting surface helps the sprinkles adhere evenly.
  • Sprinkles: Using a shallow bowl or plate makes it much easier to coat the tops completely from edge to edge.
  • Save the Cake Scraps: Crumble the leftover cake pieces into dessert cups, then top with frosting and rainbow sprinkles for mini dot cakes. It's a fun way to enjoy every last bite while avoiding food waste.

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigerator: Store covered for 2-3 days; I like to cover them in plastic wrap lightly to not squish the sprinkles.
  • Freezer: Not recommended, as the sprinkles can soften and the colors may bleed once thawed.
  • Serving: I find box cakes are best enjoyed the same day.
  • Make Ahead: If you want to bake the cake a day ahead, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap once cooled and place in the fridge until needed, then assemble and decorate closer to serving time.

CHOCOLATE DOT CAKE Recipe FAQs

What type of sprinkles work best?

We've found that rainbow nonpareil sprinkles create the closest look to the viral bakery versions and provide the most even coverage.

Can I use homemade cake instead of a cake mix?

You can. A sturdy chocolate sheet cake works well as long as it holds its shape when cut into rounds.

What can I use if I don't have mason jars?

Any dessert cup, small glass, or food-safe container with a wide opening works well. We've even used disposable dessert cups for parties.

Can these be made for a party the day before?

You can, although the sprinkles may start to bleed slightly into the frosting after several hours. They look their best when assembled the same day.

Why are my sprinkles sliding off the frosting?

Usually the frosting needs to be smoothed flat and slightly thicker on top. Pressing gently into the sprinkles also helps them stick more evenly.
