Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • All the Fun without the Gluten: It can be tricky to find great gluten-free recipes alternatives.
  • Simple and Easy: This recipe is so simple to make, you might find yourself adding it to your new rotation.
  • Storability: I love making a batch of these and storing half in the freezer to keep them extra fresh and enjoy them all week long.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reader Review

"I recently tried these gluten-free buttermilk waffles, and I am beyond impressed! From the very first bite, they were perfectly fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Often, gluten-free waffles can end up dense or dry, but these were anything but—they melted in my mouth! The subtle tang of the buttermilk adds an extra depth of flavor that makes them taste even better than traditional waffles. They held up beautifully with toppings like fresh berries, whipped cream, or even just a drizzle of pure maple syrup. Whether you’re gluten-free or not, these waffles will seriously elevate your breakfast game. Highly recommend giving them a try!"

Ingredients

The ingredients for this recipe are things you will find in your pantry regularly making
this a simple dish to create with little to no planning.

Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles Ingredients

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free All-Purpose Baking Flour: This is our go-to for gluten free flour which acts as the base for the waffles.
  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk will help to balance sugar flavour and ensure a fluffy texture. Storebought or homemade is great. See our notes below for how to make your own.
  • Eggs: Will offer a sweetness as well as keeping the batter together.
  • Unsalted Butter: Unsalted butter offers some sweetness while balancing the salt.

For this waffle recipe, you'll want to have on hand non-stick spray, waffle maker, mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons and a whisk.

Variations

  • Chocolate Chips: A classic waffle combination, add some chocolate chips into the batter at the end.
  • Crispy Bacon Bits: Savory options at breakfast are our favorite!
  • Regular Flour (for a non Gluten-Free version): If you aren't gluten-free you can use all-purpose flour and these are just as good; we do both in our house depending on who is eating!
  • Kodiak Pancake & Waffle Mix (for a high protein version): Adding some extra protein to your morning just got easier.

How To Make Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles

This dish comes together quickly and easily, making it perfect for busy mornings.

Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles Batter Being Made

In a medium bowl, whisk all dry ingredients, then set aside. In a large bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, sugar and vanilla until incorporated.

Then add the dry ingredients in and mix until just combined (note: the batter will look thick and slightly lumpy).

In a preheated waffle maker, pour about ¾ cup of batter into your prepared waffle maker and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions (note: this is for a 7” waffle).

Repeat until all batter is complete, lightly spraying with more non-stick spray as needed.

Serve immediately and top with butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit or a combination of all three.

Hint: Buttermilk is best for this recipe because it adds a delicious tangy flavor, while keeping the batter fluffier. This results in light and airy waffles.

Recipe Tips

  • Mix Gently: Gluten-free flour can toughen if overmixed, so stir just until the batter comes together. A few small lumps are totally fine.
  • Let the Batter Rest: A quick 5-10 minute rest helps the flour hydrate and gives you fluffier waffles with a better structure.
  • Preheat the Waffle Iron Fully: Gluten-free waffles brown a bit slower, so a well-heated iron helps create that crisp, golden exterior.

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigerator: Buttermilk waffles can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezer: Homemade waffles can be stored in freezer bags and frozen for 2-3 months.
  • Reheating: To reheat, avoid the microwave as the waffles will come out soggy. A toaster oven or air fryer would be best to maintain the waffles' crispy exterior.
  • Make Ahead: These waffles hold up well, you can pop them a toaster, toaster oven or oven, to heat them back up without making them soggy like a microwave can.

Serving Suggestions

  • Brunch Pairings: Serve these waffles with an Apple Cider Mimosa, Blackberry Champagne Cocktail, Sheet Pan Banana Pancakes, Ham and Swiss Quiche or Banana French Toast.

Buttermilk Waffles Recipe FAQs

How do I store leftover Buttermilk Waffles?

Once waffles are fully cooled, store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Waffles can also be stored in a freezer bag and frozen for 2 to 3 months.

What is the difference between Homestyle and Buttermilk Waffles?

The difference comes down to the milk. Homestyle waffles use regular milk, while buttermilk waffles use buttermilk, which creates a lighter, fluffier batter. Both are delicious, just a little different in texture.

How can I make homemade buttermilk?

If you don't have store-bought buttermilk on hand, you can make your own in a pinch. To make your own buttermilk, simply mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of milk, and let sit for 5-10 minutes.
