Ingredients

This grasshopper pie recipe uses simple ingredients that the whole family can enjoy.

Grasshopper Pie without Alcohol Ingredients

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Cream Cheese: Acts as the foundation of your mint filling.
  • Chocolate Crust: Gives the pie its rich and crunchy chocolate flavor. When I am in a rush, I usually buy a premade, but you can make your own by pulsing your favorite cookies in a food processor until you get fine crumbs, mixing with melted butter, then pressing them into a pie dish.
  • Icing Sugar/Powdered Sugar: Adds sweetness to the balance the mint.
  • Mint Extract: Adds a refreshing flavor; use pure mint or peppermint extract.
  • Green Food Coloring: A few drops of green food coloring to give it a St Patrick's Day, festive vibe!
  • Cool Whip: Gives your filling its creamy consistency. A homemade whip cream works great too.

To make this alcohol-free no bake pie, grab a electric hand mixer, measuring cups and spoons, and a large mixing bowl.

Variations

  • Homemade Crust: Opt for a homemade version instead of store-bought if you'd like.
  • Mint-Flavored Liqueur: Our version of this dessert does not include booze. If you would like to give this pie a boozy kick, substitute with crème de menthe and a splash of creme de cacao, or even peppermint schnapps.
  • Dairy Free: Switch out cream cheese and cool whip for dairy-free versions for a vegan dessert.
  • Homemade Whipped Cream: Instead of Cool Whip, whip 2 cups heavy whipping cream with a hand mixer's whisk attachment on high speed until stiff peaks form, then fold it into the filling.

Recipe Tips

  • Soften Cream Cheese: Let it sit at room temperature for at least 60 minutes, so it blends smoothly and doesn't leave lumps in your filling.
  • Whip it Good: Beat the cream cheese and powdered sugar until very smooth before folding in the whipped topping.
  • Adjust the Color: Add green food coloring gradually to get that signature pastel mint shade without going too dark.
  • Crush Cookies Just Before: If using Oreo crumbs as garnish, wait until just before serving to sprinkle them on. This keeps them crisp and prevents sogginess.
  • Add Texture: Stir in mini chocolate chips or chocolate shavings to the filling for a subtle crunch.
  • Clean Slices: Dip your knife in hot water and wipe it dry between cuts for neat, clean slices every time.

Grasshopper Pie without Alcohol FAQs

Why is it called Grasshopper Pie?

It takes its name and flavor from the classic Grasshopper cocktail, a minty green drink made with crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and cream that dates back to the early 1900s.

Can I make Grasshopper Pie without Gelatin?

Absolutely, we do not use it in ours. The cream cheese, whipped topping, and icing sugar will help to create the pies structure, while also enhancing their flavor.

Can I make this Grasshopper Pie dairy-free?

Yes you can! We have not tested this ourselves, but using a dairy-free whipped topping and a vegan cream cheese is an option.

How do I get the right amount of mint flavor in a Grasshopper Pie?

Mint extract is a very intense flavor, so we recommend adding it last. Mix it in well and test a little on a spoon before adding more. You can start with ½ - 1 teaspoon of mint extract if you are concerned it might be too much. I enjoy mint, and find that 1 ½ teaspoons is perfect for me.

How do I make my Grasshopper Pie slices more firm?

You can place it in the freezer for 4 hours prior to slicing to stiffen it up a bit. This is a great way to get a perfect slice, and a different texture to the pie. I prefer to serve it cold myself.
