Maple syrup is a great way to bring some sweetness to the very earthy flavor of Brussels sprouts. With the bacon added, you will love the juxtaposition of the smoky bacon flavor against the sweet maple syrup.

Nothing says autumn quite like Brussels Sprouts and Maple. I was looking for the perfect green side dish to go with my Herb Butter Turkey; enter these irresistibly sweet and salty sprouts. This recipe also pairs perfectly with our Old Fashioned Turkey Dressing.

Why You Will Love These Brussel Sprouts With Maple Syrup

  • Quick and Easy: Have a delicious side dish ready to go within 15 minutes.
  • Tasty: The combination of sweet maple syrup and salty bacon create delicious layers of flavor.
  • Versatile: Maple Brussels Sprouts pair very well with a variety of mains, from a full turkey dinner to weeknight chicken.
  • One Pan: We always love a one pan meal for its simplicity and ease of cleanup.
  • Crowd-Pleaser: Even the pickiest of eaters won't be able to resist these deliciously crispy, caramelized Brussels sprouts. Everyone will be adding seconds to their plate!

Ingredients

We are keeping it easy with only Brussel sprouts, bacon, maple syrup and water. It’s really just that simple!

Maple Brussel Sprouts Ingredients

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Bacon: Adds a beautiful smoky and salty flavor.
  • Brussels Sprouts: Delicious and hearty, Brussels sprouts are a great way to add some vegetables to your holiday plate.
  • Water: To help steam the Brussels sprouts.
  • Maple Syrup: We recommend opting for pure maple syrup for the most authentic flavor.

For this recipe, you'll want to have on hand a large pan with a lid, measuring cups, and a spatula.

Substitutions and Variations

Love this recipe but want to make it your own? You can easily adapt this versatile dish to different tastes and dietary requirements. Here are some helpful ideas for you to change Maple Brussel Sprouts.

  • Turkey Bacon: Swap pork bacon for turkey bacon.
  • Vegan Bacon: Make this a meatless meal by substituting vegan bacon.
  • Pancetta: Pancetta is a cured meat that adds a delicious flavor similar to bacon.
  • Smoked Ham: Similar to a smoky bacon, ham will offer a great flavor.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar will offer a caramel-like sweetness.
  • Honey: Trade maple syrup for honey to give this recipe a different flavor profile.
  • Balsamic Glaze: Finish your Brussels sprouts with a drizzle of balsamic glaze to increase the flavor.
  • Toasted Nuts: Sprinkle toasted walnuts, pecans, or slivered almonds on your Brussels sprouts for extra crunch.
  • Fresh Herbs: Add herbs like thyme and parsley for extra freshness.
  • Chili Flakes: Add a kick of heat.
  • Cheese: Try a sprinkle of fresh parmesan or pecorino romano over your Brussels sprouts to add more flavor.

How to Make Maple Glazed Brussel Sprouts

Over medium high heat, in a large skillet add chopped bacon and cook for about 5 minutes. Add Brussels sprouts and ½ cup of water and immediately cover with a lid and cook for about 5 minutes untouched. Stir and repeat with the remaining ½ cup of water. Remove the lid and drizzle with maple syrup. Finally, if you like your Brussels sprouts seared, cook them to your personal preference. Optionally, sprinkle with a flaky sea salt for an enhance of flavors.

Hint: After you have cut your Brussels sprouts, you can give them a check for any dirt that may not have been washed off.

How to Store Maple Brussel Sprouts

You can store Maple Brussels Sprouts in the fridge. I would recommend against freezing them as the texture wouldn’t hold up well to reheat.

  • Refrigerator: Once cooled, you can place in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
  • Reheating: Bring to room temperature and microwave or air fry as desired.
  • Make Ahead: You can trim the Brussels sprouts and chop the bacon in advance. Once you are ready, it will save you that much more time to cook.

What to Serve with Maple Roasted Brussel Sprouts

What you will love most of Maple Brussels Sprouts is that you can served them with most proteins.

  • Herb Butter Turkey (and Gravy): A classic Thanksgiving dinner pairing.
  • Chicken Thighs with Honey: The subtle sweetness in both dishes complement each other so well.

Frequently Asked Questions For Maple Brussel Sprouts

Do you have questions about Maple Brussels Sprouts? Maybe we can help you with some of our most commonly asked questions and answers.

How do I store any leftovers?

You can store the cooled Brussels sprouts in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

What should I look for when buying Brussels sprouts?

For the freshest Brussels sprouts, look for ones that are firm and tightly packed with green heads. Avoid any that have yellowing leaves or black spots.

Can I use any type of maple syrup?

We suggest using pure maple syrup for the most authentic flavor. The artificial syrup that you sometimes use for pancakes and waffles will not yield the same result.

Do I have to cut my Brussels sprouts in half before cooking?

You do not have to cut them in advance. It can help them to caramelize more even if you do.

Can I use frozen Brussels Sprouts?

It is best to use fresh for this recipe. If you want to use frozen, thaw them first, and pat them dry.
