Substitutions and Variations
Here are some helpful ideas for you to change up this coconut mojito with coconut milk.
- Coconut Rum: For a plain mojito, use light rum, also known as white or silver rum. If you are looking for a substitute the coconut rum, you can add ½ teaspoon coconut extract with it.
- Hold the Rum: This recipe still has so much flavor that if you want to make it non-alcoholic, you can make yourself a delicious coconut mojito mocktail.
- Granulated Sugar: To sweeten this cocktail, you can swap regular sugar for brown sugar, superfine sugar, cane sugar, honey or simple syrup work well. These all also work well for the sugar rim if you choose to rim your glass.
- Coconut Milk: For a richer, thicker texture swap the coconut milk for coconut cream.
- Club Soda: Try any type of sparkling water instead of club soda. And if you do not want the carbonation, you can use coconut water.
- Fresh Mint Leaves: Mix it up with basil for a unique twist.
- Add Berries: You can mix up what you muddle in your glass and make a blueberry mojito, strawberry mojito or blackberry mojitos!
How to Make Coconut Mojito with Coconut Milk
Check out how quick and easy it was to make this coconut milk mojito.

If rimming your glass, run a lime wedge along the outside rim of the glass. Sprinkle a little sugar and lime zest to a shallow plate and dip wet rim to coat.
To your glass, add sugar, salt, half a lime, and 3-5 mint leaves and then use a cocktail muddler or the end of a wooden spoon to muddle the ingredients together with firm but not intense pressure.
Place some ice to the glass then pour rum and coconut milk in. Stir well to incorporate sugary mixture then top with as much club soda as desired.
Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and enjoy.
Hint: Use a balanced pressure when muddling. Push hard enough to release juice and oil, but too hard can release bitterness from the lime peel.

How to Serve a Coconut Milk Mojito
- Stirred: While this cocktail is made within the glass and stirred, the key to a great mojito is the muddling. This enhances the flavors and releases the natural oils within the lime and fresh mint. If you do not have a cocktail muddler, you can use the end of a wooden spoon or a silicone spatula if needed.
- Glass: Traditionally speaking, a mojito is served in a highball glass to accommodate for a long pour of soda water. In this recipe, to highlight the coconut flavor, we only use a small amount, so we serve it in a short glass.
- Garnishes: Fresh mint leaves are a classic garnish for a mojito. A lime wedge, or slice can be used as well.
