One thing I love for a Sunday breakfast is delicious, fluffy Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles. Today I will walk you through my recipe for the tastiest waffles you've ever had! My son loves waffles stacked on his plate with warm maple syrup and a little extra butter. However, this dish can also be used in a savory setting if you are creative enough.
With cooler days around the corner, we can all use a warm breakfast to start our day.
The crispy exterior and the fluffy interior give the feeling of a good morning hug. But,
you can also pair these waffles with my Chicken Thighs with Honey for a fresh take
on chicken and waffles.

Why You Will Love Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles
- All the Fun without the Gluten: It can be tricky to find great gluten-free recipes alternatives.
- Simple and Easy: This recipe is so simple to make, you might find yourself adding it to your new rotation.
- Storability: I love making a batch of these and storing half in the freezer to keep them extra fresh and enjoy them all week long.
Ingredients
The ingredients for this recipe are things you will find in your pantry regularly making
this a simple dish to create with little to no planning.
See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.
- Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free All-Purpose Baking Flour: This is our go-to for gluten free flour which acts as the base for the waffles.
- Baking Powder: This will help to create height and brown the waffles.
- Baking Soda: Also to help with height.
- Sea Salt: Salt is important to enhance the flavors.
- Buttermilk: Buttermilk will help to balance sugar flavour and ensure a fluffy texture. Storebought or homemade is great. See our notes below for how to make your own.
- Eggs: Will offer a sweetness as well as keeping the batter together.
- Unsalted Butter: Unsalted butter offers some sweetness while balancing the salt. Granulated Sugar: Adds sweetness.
- Pure Vanilla Extract: Helps to add some subtle flavor.
For this recipe, you'll want to have on hand non-stick spray, a waffle maker, mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons, and a whisk.
Substitutions and Variations
Create a sweet version of Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles by adding chocolate chips to the batter before cooking the waffles. Perhaps you are interested in a savory version by adding crispy fried bacon bits into your batter for a salty added crunch.
- Chocolate Chips: A classic waffle combination.
- Blueberries: If you want to opt for a natural sweetness to the chocolate chip version.
- Crispy Bacon Bits: Savory options at breakfast are our favorite!
- Regular Flour (for a non Gluten-Free version): If you aren't gluten-free you can use all-purpose flour and these are just as good; we do both in our house depending on who is eating!
- Kodiak Pancake & Waffle Mix (for a high protein version): Adding some extra protein to your morning just got easier.
How Can I Make Homemade Buttermilk Waffles?
This is a fun dish to make that comes together quickly and easily. Before you
know it the whole family will be gathered around the breakfast table digging in to these tasty treats!
In a medium bowl, whisk all dry ingredients, then set aside. In a large bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, sugar, and vanilla until incorporated. Then add the dry ingredients in, and mix until just combined (note: the batter will look thick and slightly lumpy).
In a preheated waffle maker, pour about ¾ cup of batter into your prepared waffle maker and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions (note: this is for a 7” waffle).
Repeat until all batter is complete, lightly spraying with more non-stick spray as needed. Serve immediately and top with butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a combination of all three.
Hint: Buttermilk is best for this recipe because it adds a delicious tangy flavor. It also makes for a fluffier batter which results in light, airy waffles that are irresistible.

How to Store Homemade Buttermilk Waffles
Homemade waffles are a great breakfast recipe to make in advance for meal prep and to keep on hand for those busy mornings!
- Refrigerator: Buttermilk waffles can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: Homemade waffles can be stored in freezer bags and frozen for 2-3 months.
- Reheating: To reheat, avoid the microwave as the waffles will come out soggy. A toaster oven or air fryer would be best to maintain the waffles' crispy exterior.
- Make Ahead: These waffles hold up well, you can pop them a toaster, toaster oven or oven, to heat them back up without making them soggy like a microwave can.
What to Serve with Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles
- Butter: Don't let the name stop you from adding an extra buttery layer to these delicious waffles.
- Maple Syrup: A classic waffle topper.
- Fried Chicken: Who doesn't love chicken and waffles?!
- Fresh Fruit: Berries are our favorite ways to top waffles, but use your imagination.
Top Tip
Sometimes gluten-free items tend to stick more, be generous on the non-stick spray between each new waffle.
Frequently Asked Questions For Making Buttermilk Waffles
Once waffles are fully cooled, store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Waffles can also be stored in a freezer bag and frozen for 2 to 3 months.
The main thing separating Homestyle and Buttermilk Waffles is the type of milk used. Homestyle waffles are made with milk, and Buttermilk Waffles are made with buttermilk. Both options are just as delicious, but the addition of buttermilk to a waffle will make for a fluffier, less dense batter.
If you don't have store-bought buttermilk on hand, you can make your own in a pinch. To make your own buttermilk, simply mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of milk, and let sit for 5-10 minutes.

Sherry says
I recently tried these gluten-free buttermilk waffles, and I am beyond impressed! From the very first bite, they were perfectly fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Often, gluten-free waffles can end up dense or dry, but these were anything but—they melted in my mouth! The subtle tang of the buttermilk adds an extra depth of flavor that makes them taste even better than traditional waffles. They held up beautifully with toppings like fresh berries, whipped cream, or even just a drizzle of pure maple syrup. Whether you’re gluten-free or not, these waffles will seriously elevate your breakfast game. Highly recommend giving them a try!
