Apple Cider Simple Syrup in a Jar

Whether it is a hot or cold beverage, our Apple Cider Simple Syrup is a great way to enhance your traditional favorites.

What is Apple Cider Simple Syrup?

Usually made from equal parts sugar and water, traditional simple syrup is cooked down to a thick syrup. By replacing the water with apple cider, you'll love this twist that can be used in your everyday cocktails, beverages, cooking and baking. For some added depth, you can add some fall warming spices such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice, or nutmeg.

This was inspired by my Apple Cider Sangria with White Wine recipe. One of our favorite drinks is an Old Fashioned, and we are always looking for ways to put a new twist on classics. We decided to try it with the addition of Apple Cider Simple Syrup for a seasonal flavor.

Why You Will Love This Apple Cider Simple Syrup Recipe

  • Quick: In just 15 minutes you will have a homemade syrup to use.
  • Simple Ingredients: With just two ingredients (plus optional add-ins) this is one of the easiest things you can make that add so much depth to many beverages and dishes.
  • Versatile: Not just for cocktails, you can use it for mocktails, hot and cold beverages, cooking and baking.

Ingredients

All you need is a couple simple ingredients, many of which you might already have at home!

Apple Cider Simple Syrup Ingredients

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Sweetened Apple Cider: The base for the simple syrup, if unsweetened is all you have it'll work well too.
  • Light Brown Sugar: The base for the syrups thickness and enhances the sweet flavor.
  • Cinnamon Stick: Enhances the cinnamon flavor in the cider and adds warmth.
  • Whole Cloves: Additional warming spice that complements cinnamon.
  • Allspice Berries: A fragrant spice that balances the fruity sweetness.

For this Apple Cider Simple Syrup recipe, you'll want to have on hand a small pot, spatula and small strainer.

Substitutions and Variations

Love this recipe but looking to mix it up?

  • Unsweetened Apple Cider: A totally viable substitute in this recipe and keeps the sugar content a bit lower.
  • Dark Brown Sugar: Use dark versus light to allow for a deeper flavor.
  • Granulated Sugar: Can be used but will change the depth of the syrup.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: Adds a subtle hint of vanilla, while enhancing all other flavors.

How to Store Apple Cider Simple Syrup Recipe

There is so much you can do with this simple syrup that you will likely use it all up. But if you are looking for some storage options, here are some helpful tips.

  • Refrigerator: Once cooled, place in an airtight container for 2-4 weeks.
  • Freezer: While you can freeze simple syrups, their consistency might not be the same after thawed. Whisk over low heat once thawed to bring more closely back to its original form.
  • Reheating: If the syrup is too thick you can slowly heat it back up to thin it out.

How To Use Apple Cider Simple Syrup

  • Cocktails/Mocktails: Add to your classic favorites and give it a seasonal twist.
  • Cold Beverages: Add a tablespoon or two into a pitcher of your favour lemonade or sangria. We have added it to our Apple Cider Sangria with White Wine for an enhanced apple cider sweetness.
  • Hot Beverages: Use as a replacement for your sugar in tea or coffee. Try it in or drizzled on our Caramel Mocha Coffee recipe.
  • Cooking: Add to a marinade to sweeten your meat dishes.
  • Glaze: Drizzle on your vegetables over the final stages of cooking, like our Maple Brussel Sprouts.
  • Syrup: Pour over our Gluten Free Buttermilk Waffles or Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes for an added complexity in taste.
  • Baking: Baste your cake or cupcakes for added sweetness and an extra moist dessert, before adding any toppings/icing.

Top Tip

Make a thick simple syrup by doubling the sugar content and making a more concentrate syrup. Also knows as a rich simple syrup, it has enhanced sweetness and texture. Thick syrup will have a longer shelf life due to the added sugar.
