Sweet Tart Shot Ingredients

See the recipe card below for the exact quantities of each ingredient.

  • Southern Comfort: Smooth whiskey with hints of vanilla and spice.
  • Black Raspberry Liqueur: Gives this shot its fruity, berry-forward flavor.

For this recipe, you'll want to have on hand a cocktail shaker and strainer, shot glasses, and measuring spoons.

Substitutions and Variations

Looking to mix up this Sweet Tart Shot Recipe and and make it your own? Here are our suggested variations.

  • Sour Mix: Can be pre-made or your own homemade mix (see recipe notes).
  • Lemon Juice: If you are not a fan of tart lime flavor, you can leave it out of your sour mix and make a lemon-only version. Lemonade can also be used.
  • Non-Alcoholic: To make this shot a mocktail, replace black raspberry liqueur with a similar syrup or grenadine, and replace Southern Comfort with your choice of juice. Combine with sour mix, and serve.
  • Southern Comfort: Substitute with the alcohol of your choice, keeping in mind it may change the flavor profile of your shot.
  • Sweet Tart Cocktail: You can strain the drink into a single martini glass and enjoy it as a cocktail instead of a shot.
  • Sour Level: Adjust the tartness of the shot, increase or reduce the amount of sour mix used.

Shake until chilled and strain into 2 shot glasses.

Hint: Don't forget to chill your ingredients. Making sure every component of this shot is fully chilled will guarantee the smoothest shot with the most refreshing flavor. Your shot glasses can also be pre-chilled - put them in the freezer for a few minutes before serving.

How to Serve a Sweet Tart Shot

Here are our preferred ways to serve this cocktail.

  • Shaken/Stirred: This shot is shaken, to make it as chilled as possible.
  • Glass: Best served in a shot glass, but it can also be made into a single cocktail by straining into a martini glass.
  • Garnishes: Garnishes are optional, but we suggest to sugar the rim with sanding sugar or crushed-up Sweet Tart candies.

What to Serve with a Sweet Tart Shot

  • Savory Appetizers and Snacks: To balance the tart flavors, serve with a salty snack. Some of our favorites are our Slow Cooker Spinach and Artichoke Dip, and for a spicy twist, our Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Wing Dip. These are both great options, especially if you are feeding a crowd! Loaded Nachos or chips with Caramelized Onion Dip would also make delicious shareable finger foods.
  • Sweet Treat: Double down on fun, nostalgic flavors with our Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Dip Recipe.
  • Candy: To enhance the candy-like flavor of this shot, serve with Sweet Tarts, and any of your favorites! Not only is it fun, but an assortment of gummy candies will add to the sweet side of this drink and balance the sour flavors.

Top Tips

If possible, don't skip making your own sour mix. If you have the ingredients on hand and a few extra minutes to spare, the bright and fresh citrus flavors of homemade sour mix are so worth it and bring your shot to the next level. See recipe notes for details.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sweet Tart Shots

Do you have questions about making a Sweet Tart Shot?

What type of glassware should I use for this cocktail?

This drink should be served in a shot glass, but can also be poured into a martini glass to be enjoyed as a cocktail.

Should this cocktail be shaken or stirred? How do I strain the cocktail when pouring it into a glass?

This cocktail is best served shaken. We recommend investing in a cocktail shaker set - it's a great tool to have on hand, even for beginner mixologists.

Adding ice is not required for this shot.

Can I make this cocktail ahead of time and store it in the fridge?
